چکیده

Soil roughness is a very important parameter affecting radar backscattering coefficient. This paper wants to introduce a new method to retrieve the combined roughness parameter 2 / Zs s l = on the condition of rough surface. To achieve this goal, two experiments are conducted: (1) Advanced Integral Equation Model (AIEM) is used to simulate backscattering coefficients; and (2) a new algorithm to retrieve the roughness parameter Zs from ASAR data is presented and confirmed. The root mean square error (RMSE) of results between estimated and measured is 0.075. Therefore, we prove that the proposed method is applicable to retrieve roughness parameter Zs on the rough surface.

Soil moisture retrieval over the Mackenzie River basin using AMSR-E 6.9 GHz brightness temperature

An approach is proposed to estimate soil moisture and to monitor its change from AMSR-E 6.9 GHz passive microwave data acquired over a large northern basin. The lack of in situ direct measurements is a major issue to be resolved to reach the aim of this work. Therefore, “external” ancillary data were used as a surrogate for available measurements. The methodology is based on the inversion of a ...

Comparison of two retrieval methods with combined passive and active microwave remote sensing observations for soil moisture

The brightness temperature (BT) and backscattering coefficient (BSC) measured simultaneously by passive and active microwave sensors have great potential for the estimation of land surface soil moisture (SM). Several methods with combined passive and active microwave remote sensing observations for SM have been reported. Usually, the use of these methods, requires an accurate roughness conditio...

An Alternative Roughness Parameterization for Soil Moisture Retrievals from Passive Microwave Observations

The usefulness of L-band radiometer observations for the retrieval of near-surface soil moisture has already been demonstrated in many studies. Unfortunately, the ability to estimate soil moisture from these remotely sensed observations is hampered by the infeasibility to characterize the roughness of the soil surface. Given the difficulty to measure in situ soil roughness parameters, improved ...

Characterization of Rape Field Microwave Emission and Implications to Surface Soil Moisture Retrievals

In the course of Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission calibration and validation activities, a ground based L-band radiometer ELBARA II was situated at the test site Puch in Southern Germany in the Upper Danube Catchment. The experiment is described and the different data sets acquired are presented. The L-band microwave emission of the biosphere (L-MEB) model that is also used in th...

Soil Moisture Retrieval Using Data Cube Representation of Radar Scattering

A time-series algorithm is proposed to retrieve surface (from surface down to 1 m depth) soil moisture using the simulated radar data. The time-series approach uses co-polarized (V V and HH) backscattering coefficient (σ) values. Temporal averaging is applied to reduce the radar measurement noise. To the extent that the surface roughness does not change within the time-series window, the reduct...
